The Alipore Zoo is the oldest zoological park in India and this place is a major tourist attraction in Kolkata, West Bengal. The Alipore Zoo attracts tourists from all across the world. Alipore Zoo is probably best known as the home of the Aldabra giant tortoise Adwaita, who was reputed to have been over 250 years old when he died in 2006. The place is beautiful and attractive for nature enthusiasts, and also for families and with children, to explore the abundant and plentiful wildlife of the country . It Spread over an area of 46.5 acres, the zoo has been operating since 1876, when it was first opened for the general public.

The Alipore Zoo becomes especially crowded because of the attractive place for travel and tourism in Kolkata. Inside Zoo crowds during the winter season, especially during December and January. The highest attendance till date was on January 1, 2018 with 110,000 visitors.

  5. Rupees 250 per hour for Video Camera

Wildlife at Alipore Zoo 

The Alipore Zoo is well known for the vast variety of mammals, birds and reptiles that stay here. The zoo maintains carnivorous animals like the Bengal tiger, jungle cat, jaguar, lion, fishing cat, Himalayan black bear, sloth bear, etc. A myriad of herbivorous animals like swamp deer, brow-antlered, sambar deer, hog deer, barking deer, spotted deer, blackbuck, Indian one-horned rhinoceros, Indian elephant, zebra and hippopotamus can also be found here. It is also not uncommon to spot animals like the chimpanzee, hamadryas baboon, bonnet monkey, olive baboon, rhesus monkey, Assamese monkey and common langur, and many more.

The zoo has home to several colourful pheasants like the Chinese silver pheasant, golden pheasant, reeves's pheasant, Lady Amherst's pheasant, green pheasant and Nepal Kalij pheasant. Other birds found here include the bare-eyed cockatoo, citron crested cockatoo, sulphur-crested cockatoo, spoonbill, Black swan, painted stork, adjutant stork, white stork and black-necked stork.
